Morning Joe’s Email Attack on Hillary Doesn’t Add Up
September 15, 2015
Recently, pundits, especially those sitting around Morning Joe’s table have been gnawing on two bits of gristle. First, they say Hillary is dropping in the polls because she had a private email server, although at least two polls indicate between 60 and 70 percent of Democratic voters don’t care about email servers. Despite what voters indicate in polling, Joe and company are intent on pulling Hillary down.
Joe Scarborough, a former Republican Congressman from the Florida Panhandle, and a current Republican operative, has repeatedly called Hillary a liar because she said sent nor received any emails designated as “classified” on her non-classified email server. Joe’s “proof” is his speculation that some of the material sent or received by Hillary detailing her conversations with heads of states must have been “automatically” designated as classified. In fact, any designation of new State Department material as “classified” had to have been done by Hillary, the “official authorizing authority” for the State Department, or her designee.
Second, Joe and his guests have discussed the polls indicating about half of the Republican voters prefer candidates (Donald Trump and Ben Carson) who have never held political office over those more closely identified with the Republican establishment candidates, Jeb Bush, Marco Rubio, and Scott Walker. (Other establishment candidates such as Rand Paul and John Kasich either never had much support before Donald Trump entered the race or entered the race after Trump had blown up conventional wisdom.)

Joe and his guests have also suggested Hillary is also losing ground because she is an establishment candidate while, Bernie Sanders, currently her primary Democratic opponent is considered more of an outsider than Hillary. Joe and company contend both Republican and Democratic voters are tired of politics as usual and thus, the anti-establishment candidates have captured the voters’ imagination.
Interestingly, Joe and company have been unable to combine Hillary’s drop in the polls and the anti-establishment wave. Back of the envelope calculations comparing the Real Clear Politics average poll results of July 1 and Sept 10 for Bush, Rubio, and Walker, their average lost 16.4 percent. During the same period, Clinton lost 17.2 percent.
If Hillary had lost an identical 16.4 points of her lead in the polls, she would be at 46.6 percent. Surprisingly, she is at 45.8 percent. One could conclude a .8 point loss is due to her email server. The rest of the drop could be considered due to the anti-establishment wave.
If these comparisons have any validity, then Clinton is not only stronger than her possible Republican opponents, but is one of the strongest candidates for Presidents in some time. In addition, it also indicates Morning Joe’s attempts to undermine Clinton on behalf of the Republican Party are meeting with minimal success.
