Resistance Book Corner
We are living in treacherous times. A would-be authoritarian strong man threatens our democratic institutions and Russia is attacking our nation. Our political system is in such disarray we cannot be confident it will defend us. Regardless of the specific events preceding these disruptions, the keystone on which they rest is a disregard for truth.
There are many sources of this disregard for the truth such as wishful thinking, ideology, and the flagrant use of lies to sow disunity and disarray. Will the glow of steel mills ever again light the skies over Buffalo, Pittsburgh, and Youngstown? Can the U.S. dictate policies of other nations as it did in fifties? What can we do to curb propaganda spewing forth from domestic broadcasters and appropriation of social media by foreign intelligence services? And most importantly, one of the most essential sources of this disregard are the lies Republican politicians tell voters. Republicans have won elections by lying to voters. They promise that their policies are aimed at restoring and reinforcing “American” social values. In fact, those policies are designed to redistribute income to the one percent at the expense of the rest of society. When outright lies have not been sufficient, they have bargained with their voters for current hardships (i.e., inadequate healthcare) for future benefits (i.e., the reincarnation of their lost American Dreams). As a result, Republican leaning voters expect politicians to lie and devalue the truth as the basis for their understanding of politics and political decisions. As Progressives we must uncover the lies told to benefit the one percent. We must confront these lies and try to deprogram some of the Trump’s true believers. Below are some books that will help in the discovering the truth. Simply click on the ones you find interesting and you can purchase them from Amazon Books. In the coming weeks we will have more to say about some of these books. |

The Republican Party bears no resemblance to your father’s Republican Party. The Party has been captured by the movement conservatives who are conservative ideologues and bound to a belief in their group privilege. It has become a predominantly white party espousing elitist, corporatist, and authoritarian perspectives that are undermining the democratic ideals on which the U.S. is built.
As Mark Twain says, “history does not repeat itself, but it does rhyme.” What rhymes with the movement conservatives of today and their perspectives are the robber barons of the gilded age and the conservative businessmen who opposed the New Deal (e.g., Social Security, government programs to help the middle class, such as the National Industrial Recovery Act). Some of the same families that fought against the New Deal are now associated with the movement conservatism.] |
