Trump announced his selection of Heather Nauert for United Nations Secretary. Nauert a former Fox and Friends moderator and spokesperson for the Department of State woefully short of relevant experience for this job. Even the administration that selected her seems aware of this when a few hours after her selection they downgraded the position from cabinet rank. Trump himself demonstrates the problem with this kind of inexperience. While Trump has a set of deficiencies that are surely unique for the position he holds, he also lacks the political experience needed for the Presidency. Like Trump, Nauert’s deficiencies for this position will not be apparent immediately. Trump faked it well for the first nine months. (I am not counting Comey’s firing because I believe that if Comey had not fired the investigation into Trump’s conspiracy would have continued.) But inexorably, Trump’s shortcomings were revealed. Nauert’s skills will also be found wanting. In her case, it won’t be what she does so much as what she fails to do. And she will not be blamed. Most pilots would not have been blamed for their inability to land a plane on the Hudson River. We know there was at least one experienced pilot, Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger, who was able to do exactly that. That’s the thing about experience, it’s not needed until it is. https://wapo.st/2E7b3mF | Democrats have taken the majority in the House of Representatives by winning 40 seats (so far). Generally, they were successful by promising to protect health care rather than draining Trump’s swamp. But it is unlikely that they will be able to provide the protection that is needed. Trump and his administration are continuing their attack on the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare). They are issuing guidance to undermine insurance markets, tricking healthy people into buying junk plans, supporting a Texas lawsuit that if successful will end protection for preexisting conditions, and decrease the opportunity for consumers to enroll. It looks like Democrats in the House will be unable to do very much to stop Trump’s attack on the ACA. And this raises the question of what Democrats will say to the voters in 2020 if they fail to follow through on their health care promises. It may be that the Democrats will have to pivot to something they can successfully do over the next two years like draining Trump’s swamp. https://nyti.ms/2QlvovS |
