The Republican Party is engaged in two actions that show it is has become a Fascist or authoritarian party whose primary allegiance is to one person. First, it is decided to suspend any pretense in law and order for its leader – Donald Trump. The Republican Senate has signaled that it will not hold Trump accountable. Republican Senator Orin Hatch of Utah said that he does not care if Trump has broken any laws. Second, state legislatures in Michigan, Wisconsin, and North Carolina, dominated by Republicans, have passed laws to restrict the power of recently elected Democratic governors.
These actions are precisely how democracies now become Fascist or authoritarian governments subservient to one political party. The U.S. still has some institutions that are independent of the Republican Party such as the courts and media. But the Republicans are inserting judges, some unqualified and most party loyalists, into the judiciary. And the media in this country, like in other countries, can be bought by owners willing to support an authoritarian party and its leader.
