The day after Attorney General, William Barr published a statement—supposedly summarizing the conclusions of the Mueller Report—Robert Mueller, the Special Counsel, sent Barr a letter disputing the faithfulness of his summary. The distortions in Barr’s letter allowed the Trump loyalists to put out the false narrative Donald Trump had been exonerated. This false narrative was allowed to dominate the percolate for almost four weeks in the media due to the time needed to redact sensitive material in the report.
In previous testimony before the House Appropriations Committee, Barr denied that Mueller had any concerns with his statement. The letter confirmed what many Democrats had suspected: Barr’s statement was a scheme to protect Trump.
