Nonetheless, with the passing years, attitudes toward Dr. King, the Civil Rights leader, became more favorable. Generally, this is good. One consequence of Dr. King’s growing favorability is that each of us is free to find some aspect of his life or policies with which we agree. Too many of us who claim to honor Dr. King do not honor the philosophy or causes for which he stood. Instead, we honor this or that phrase that we think is the full measure of him.
Vice President Michael Pence’s claim that Dr. King’s words “now is the time to make real the promise of democracy,” supports any part of the Trump administration policies is an example of how his words have been misunderstood and falsely applied. No administration since his death has stood so squarely against everything Dr. King fought for than the Trump administration.
But regardless of whether Vice President Pence was mistaken or lying, we should know what Dr. King stood for and we should continue his fight. And that will mean fighting against the Trump administration.
