Realignment Book Corner
We are living in tumultuous political times. Our political parties are transitioning to the final stage of a realignment that began in the sixties. The unanticipated events associated with this transition have led to uncertainty and fear because they are not well understood, especially in the "mainstream" commentators we have come to depend on.
In addition, the super rich have declared war on the middle class. Politicians and the main stream media, owned by the super rich, can not be trusted to warn us about the pitfalls associated with the political choices we are asked to support. If we want to understand the pitfalls we face and realistically evaluate the choices we face, we must educate ourselves.
Consider Politico's Larry Purdom who warned that although Hillary Clinton may win the election, she may also lose the country. He explained, "The reason is that Clinton lacks a big, new animating idea in a year when voters in both parties are so discontented they have embraced some pretty bad ones."
Below are the some book choices to help provide that education. They were written by some of the most knowledgeable political thinkers of our time and explain what is happening and why. Join us in analyzing and perhaps understanding our political destiny. In the coming weeks, we will be highlighting some of these works.

The Republican Party bears no resemblance to your father’s Republican Party. The Party has been captured by the movement conservatives who are conservative ideologues and bound to a belief in their group privilege. It has become a predominantly white party espousing elitist, corporatist, and authoritarian perspectives that are undermining the democratic ideals on which the U.S. is built.
As Mark Twain says, “history does not repeat itself, but it does rhyme.” What rhymes with the movement conservatives of today and their perspectives are the robber barons of the gilded age and the conservative businessmen who opposed the New Deal (e.g., Social Security, government programs to help the middle class, such as the National Industrial Recovery Act). Some of the same families that fought against the New Deal are now associated with the movement conservatism.]
