On a daily basis, across the US, and across the rest of the world, protesters are rallying and marching against President Trump and against his executive order restricting the entry of Muslim, but but not Christian, travelers from seven Islamic countries. Residents in the Washington DC area can find a large protest in their area on almost any day of the week. The Super Bowl, usually the highlight of late-winter sports events, was somewhat overshadowed by protesters in Houston, Texas. Trump, trying to escape to Mar-a-Lago (now the Winter White House) could none-the-less hear some of the three thousands protesters on nearby Flagler Drive who chanted, "When will we go away?.... Never!"
As Trump is breaking all conventions and possibly some laws, we look to the comforting idea of checks and balances to restore moral and political order. . Instead the Republican members of the House and Senate abdicate their responsibility and abandon their previous objections to Trump's conflicts of interest. Failure to demand a rigorous investigation into Trump's relationship with Russia is seen by some as treasonous. Although Senators are usually forgiven for confirming a President's nominees with only passing scrutiny, the refusal of Republican Senators to vote against these obviously ignorant and corrupt nominees is a dereliction of duty. With his neurotically thin skin, Trump considers a free press a threat and "the opposition team". Admittedly, the role of the media is much more complex in an age where the White House itself accepts "alternate facts" and where it has long designed coverage to present point-counterpoint arguments, suggesting that either "side" is reasonable. With so little hope of reason prevailing the protests are a welcome"voice of the people". The tough truth here is that the protests must be followed with a concentrated larger protest movement that includes voter engagement efforts to impact local and state elections and a continued demand that the media call out Trump's deliberate falsifications and lies. The media must not be allowed to normalize the very abnormal events and edicts Trump has introduced. So, protesters- keep up the marches, but organize something much more consequential. |

Democrats are in a deep, dark hole and face a long climb out. Before they can start to climb out, however, they will have to stop digging. Here are some of the obstacles Democrats face.

On Friday, January 20, Donald J Trump was inaugurated. He was rude and angry, and he frightened many people around the world, especially Americans. In the three days since Friday, he has proven that he will keep his promise to be a man of action and will keep his reputation as a selfish, egomaniacal, ignorant clod.
Among his actions in these few days are:

The Main Stream Media (MSM) has reported on the events surrounding Vladimir Putin’s efforts to help Donald Trump win the White House, such as hacking the DNC and the disinformation campaign, but has continued hand wringing over what those efforts mean. At least since the Presidency of Ronald Reagan, Russia has used disinformation campaigns to try to separate the U.S. from Western Europe and destroy or weaken NATO. Under Putin, these goals remain Russian foreign policy objectives. Trump now rejects US foreign policy of the last 70 years as he hails for policies advanced by Putin. Putin’s efforts on behalf of Donald Trump, and other authoritarian European leaders who support the policies advanced by Putin, must be seen as indicative of his overall strategy. The MSM remains bewildered about how to report these events. It appears that Russia is particularly effective as they deceive the MSM, or maybe the MSM is particularly gullible. |

The resort, like the island itself, was a beautiful tropical paradise suffering from neglect and of little concern to Donald Trump, who didn’t own the resort, but who licensed his name for a fee. The Trumps pulled out of the arrangement when the owner fell behind in paying fees and the family explained that the business climate in Puerto Rico was very difficult. A year later, as Puerto Rico was unable to repay its substantial debt to the US, Donald Trump thought that the US should not forgive their debts. Puerto Rico is an American territory and Puerto Ricans are American citizens, but Trump did not seem inclined to help that part of America to be “great again”. |
In April 2016, during the democratic primary contest, we published an analysis of Hillary Clinton as a candidate, then contrasting her with Bernie Sanders. We described Clinton as having economic blind spots, somewhat based on her loyalty to President Obama, and some based on her political philosophy hardening during the Bill Clinton’s presidency. In 2016 she was half-hearted and unconvincing as she moved away from the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) largely because she had long held free-trade beliefs and was defensive about the downsides of the North American Free Trade Agreement, originated by President George HW Bush, and signed by Bill Clinton. Hillary focused more on the proximate issues surrounding the 2008 financial crisis, rather than demonstrating a real concern for those Americans who have been hurting year after year for over 30 years. In contrast, Progressives and Donald Trump emphasized that NAFTA was largely responsible for growing unemployment and wage stagnation. Their focus on NAFTA’s negative effects may have been simplistic and missed explaining the role of automation, but were none-the-less appealing to Rust-Belt voters, who found empathy and promise.
Trump campaigned by arousing Americans' fears - especially the fear of terrorists. While he may have thought he would increase stability and security by threatening to torture terrorists and their families, a more rationale prediction is that terrorists, not fearing death, will increase their activity. Only now, their main targets are likely to be the hotels, golf courses, and commercial products, emblazoned with Trump's name in huge letters around the world. Trump's presidency will be a game changer for terrorism.
Even taunts by Republican consultants and politicians--if they had won the popular vote by almost 3 million, they would never concede--has not motivated a robust Democratic response. Democratic leaders should be ready to grab baseball bats at the sound of our house being burglarized.
We need to stop being surprised and outraged at what Trump does. We now know without any doubts that he is a narcissist, and a sociopath without impulse control or empathy. We know that he is a liar,a racist, and a misogynist. We know that he is a sexual predator and that he is an incompetent business man, whose success is based on corrupt practices. He is stubbornly ignorant, denying scientific evidence about the threat of climate change. Now we know that he is either an agent of influence for Russia or its unwitting idiot. We cannot blame a skunk for stinking. We need to disabuse ourselves of the illusion that it is fair or reasonable to give Trump a chance to ameliorate wage stagnation. He has named Andrew Puzder his Labor Secretary. Neither Trump nor he have ever shown the slightest interest in helping workers. In light of his naming Steve Mnuchin, we have no reason to believe Trump's promises to tame Wall Street and the Big Banks so that Main Street and small businesses could flourish. Trump's choice of Betsy DeVos as Education Secretary means that he intends to break his promise of school choice by actively working to destroy public schools. Trump has chosen neurosurgeon, Dr. Ben Carson, to make good on his promise to rebuild the inner city. Unfortunately, Dr. Carson's only experience in housing rests on the very nice houses that he owns. His pre-programmed failure as Secretary of HUD that residents of the inner-city will learn just what it is that they have to lose. To make America safe again, Trump has selected Roy Tillerson, CEO of Exxon-Mobil and Vladimir Putin's best-friend-forever as Secretary of State. His selection seems more likely to keep Putin's reckless aggression safe for Russia than to maintain security for the US and the rest of the world. The only promise Trump is keeping is his promise to contaminate the air we breathe and the water we drink as he is in lock step with his nominee for Secretary of the Environmental Protection Agency, Scott Pruitt. But alas, this will not result in jobs for US workers - only more profits for owners of the dirty extractive industries like the Koch brothers. Let's be honest and admit it if we don't know what to do next. But, we must not lie to ourselves and pretend that we are not facing disaster. After we admit that we don't know what to do then we can develop a plan and take action. |
